Format conversion
3GP to MP3
3GP is the original mobile video container, still produced by budget phones and old voice memo tools. Its audio is almost always AMR (adaptive multi-rate), designed for speech at very low bitrates. VideoSplit converts 3GP to a cleaner MP3 for archival in seconds.
AMR at 12.2 kbps is optimised for speech. A 320 kbps MP3 export is massive overkill bitrate-wise but keeps the output universally playable. The source bitrate is still the ceiling — do not expect 3GP-to-MP3 to sound like a studio recording.
Step-by-step
- Open VideoSplit.io. Drop the .3gp or .3g2 file.
- Pick MP3. Click the MP3 tag.
- Download. MP3 saves with the 3GP's filename.
Quality and bitrate guidance
AMR-NB (narrowband, 8 kHz) and AMR-WB (wideband, 16 kHz) are the two variants. WB sounds noticeably cleaner than NB. The MP3 output faithfully represents whatever the source held.
Practical notes
- Vintage phone voice memos in 3GP format work perfectly for transcription — feed the MP3 into Whisper.
- 3G2 is the CDMA variant and reads on the same code path.
- For very short clips (under 30 seconds), the MP3 export is essentially instant.
